Vintage Camco Aristocrat

Rare Original Camco Aristocrat Double-Tom 5-Piece
Though never as popular as the major drum brands of the 1960s and 70s – the original brand was too short-lived to really take hold, Camco was considered by those in the know, including session greats Jeff Porcaro and Jim Gordon (he also played his during his Delaney & Bonnie, Derek & the Dominos and Mad Dogs & Englishmen days), as the best of the lot, with the warm, round and musically rich tones of the original Oak Lawn, Illinois-era drums (the result of the bearing edges originally being cut for use with calf heads) topping the ‘Most Desirable’ list.
The oval badges on this excellent Aristocrat 5-piece in White Marine Pearl (with matching snare) reveal this kit as being from 1969 - 1971. Camco didn’t date-stamp their drums nor even date their catalogues (bad marketing put them out of business), so it is difficult to pinpoint the exact year, though oval badges were used during the aforementioned couple of years. But really, all anyone needs to know is that this is an exceptional kit that looks fantastic and sounds truly amazing, with highly responsive 4-ply toms featuring reinforcement rings, rotary dial tone mufflers and painted white interiors assuring the moisture stability of those shells. Tone, tone, tone, indeed!
Before a run-in with innovative drum maker George Way (the turret lugs were his idea) led to making drums in 1961, Camco was designing and making high-quality drum hardware. Those parts were machined, so there were no castings to break. Fittings on this kit include disappearing spurs and an original swivel’ mount double-tom holder (often referred to as the ‘triangle mount’).
If the round ‘turret’ lugs look familiar it’s because DW founder Don Lombardi purchased the rights to Camco’s hardware designs and the company’s plant machinery when the name and shell designs were sold to Tama. DW’s Collector Series got its start with Camco shells acquired in that purchase.
A truly a fine example of exemplary craftsmanship in what is regarded as the Rolls-Royce of vintage drums, this Camco Aristocrat kit is classy, classic and rare. It will also make you sound like an LA studio king while punching well above its weight on live gigs…. Just like that!
*Note that the white interiors differ in shade and may have been repainted at some point; the floor tom certainly has had a fresh coat of white paint recently.
